These Diamond Engagement Rings Are Eco-Friendly.
Aimee Blanchette of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune writes that as people continue to seek "greener" alternatives in everything from their food to transportation, more engaged couples are taking the plunge into conservation efforts for their wedding day, too.
Tim Reese, a farm supervisor for the Three Rivers Park District in Minnesota, said each year more couples inquire about what they can do to leave less environmental impact on their wedding day.
At Gale Woods Farm, a working educational farm in Minnetrista, Minn., a few couples have even served their wedding guests organic chicken and vegetables raised on the site.

They are planning to exchange vows in August at Gale Woods Farm, and their wedding plans include compostable utensils made from potatoes; organic, locally grown food; 100 percent recycled white gold wedding rings, and a solar-powered trailer to make popcorn.
The couple plan to save money by using less paper in their invitations and choosing a natural setting that requires few decorations. Papenfuss also chose a floral-printed dress that she can wear again instead of an expensive wedding dress that will be relegated to the back of her closet.
The couple even is offering guests the option to buy credits called "voluntary carbon offsets" from companies such as NativeEnergy to offset the environmental impact of their travel to attend the wedding. NativeEnergy uses the money it receives for projects that reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
"A wedding is a single event that definitely has a significant impact on the environment," said Houdek, an organizer with the Sierra Club.
"Symbolically, it's the day we start our lives together, and we don't want to do that in a way that isn't congruent with our values," Papenfuss added.
Discussions among brides about green weddings on online message boards recently prompted editors of TheKnot.com, a popular wedding Web site and magazine, to devote a recent issue and a section of the site to green weddings.
Christa Vagnozzi, senior editor of TheKnot.com, sees green weddings becoming a big trend. "It's more mainstream and people want to do more to protect each other and the environment. There's the celebrity influence, too. 'An Inconvenient Truth' and 'Blood Diamond' are about these issues."
Even daytime television is jumping at the chance to show support for the environment. "Days of Our Lives" characters Sami and Lucas will walk down the aisle in May with a story line that incorporates pesticide-free flowers and biodegradable wedding favors.
Geri Wolf, owner of the Style Laboratory, an event planning service in Minneapolis' Uptown, said the most common eco-friendly wedding requests are for organic food and flowers.
"People are wiling to pay a premium to know that their food hasn't been kissed with chemicals and herbicides," said Cynthia Olson, owner of Never Enough Thyme, a Minneapolis catering business that accommodates organic requests. Recently, Olson has also been asked to use environmentally friendly linens and detergent.
I say, Guys, Mazel Tov to both of you and if you really, really want to make an "impact" statement on Eco then I suggest that you get Al Gore to be your Best Man at the Wedding.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

I'll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.

If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.
