AGS Certified Diamond Documents Are Too Bulky
We just got in a bunch of AGS certified diamonds today.
Let me tell you, as prestigious as an AGS certified diamond might be, the fact is that these diamond certificates are flat out BULKY.
A GIA certifed diamond comes with a diamond certificate in a small slip cover.
The certificate is easy to carry and easy to store in our vault. The GIA cert, like most other diamond grading reports, measures approximately 4 inches wide by 10 inches high. This allows for the diamond certificate to be inserted into a jacket pocket, or conveniently lined in special boxes inside a safe (as we do with our in-house diamonds in our vaults).
Conversely, the AGS diamond document, measures approximately 7 inches wide by 9 inches high. This combination might be "pretty" to look at when the diamond certificate is opened, but it makes for a carry and storage nightmare!

I wonder if the AGS cert has been intentionally designed to stand out from the crowd. Also maybe storage is not the issue, but rather how nice the cert looks in the showcase.

AGS certs might look good but if you are in Australia their sheer bulk add to the shipping costs hence a higher price for these certs are factored into the price of a diamond.
It's a pain in the tuches too!
I peronally think AGS certs as good graders as they are, are over rated.
Some of their triple zero certs make me wonder when you see dark centre diamonds due to the wide lower pavillion facets that can darken a diamond's appearance.
Although the diamond proportions might meet their excellent/ideal cut grade parameters the stones still look dark and heavy.
The Indians are cutting these diamonds with narrower lower pavillion facets still giving the sharp contrasts desired but without making the diamonds look dark and heavy.
Also when I met some of their AGS staff at the Las Vegas fair in 2007 they were useless when I had to ask them the simplest of questions regarding shipping and seemed more interested in talking amongst themselves.
Everyone was smiling. Not a worry in the world.
One of their trouble shooters suddenly appeared from out of no where and in his best polite professional Dale Carnegie style of salesmanship sing song voice and promised me the world but also did nothing. He smiled a lot too.
This guy handed me an AGS business card stating he was employed as a consultant.
What a BS job he has but at least he bought me a cup of that famous American coffee that we can use as paint stripper.
My advice is next time keep an eye out for some bad tempered prick who knows what he is talking about because he actually works for a living.
Next time I come there I am going to make it my mission to make them all stop smiling.
This can easily be done by asking relevant questions requiring simple answers.
Good Trading and remember to smile only if you care,

Judah, I am back.
Wow ! I wrote that diatribe 22 days ago and boy oh boy didn't I sound cranky? Sheesh.
Sorry about that. It must have been a tough day.
I must say however I had a great time in Las Vegas.
In contrast that Donald Palmieri, President of GCal, Gem Certification & Assurance Lab, was there on deck by contrast to the AGS mob holding court and answering questions.
What a difference he was.
There are so many different. diamond labs popping out of nowhere these days.
It's difficult for the layman to ascertain which diamond labs are compliant.
